Yankees Acquire Steve Pearce From Astros

Steve Pearce has been well-traveled this season, but now he’s with the Yankees after they acquired him from the Astros for cash.

There was a time when Steven Pearce was a cause célèbre for the Pittsburgh Pirates -- he hit .333/.394/.622 across three levels in 2007, but he was blocked at the major-league level by Adam LaRoche and Jason Bay. He never really got a shot with the Pirates over five seasons, and he let as a free agent before this season.

The Twins picked him up, then released him before the end of spring training. The Yankees picked him up and stashed him in Triple-A before the Orioles purchased his contract on June 2. The Astros nabbed him off waivers two months later when the Orioles needed roster space. And now the Astros have turned that waiver claim into some cash by sending Pearce back to the Yankees in a post-waiver deal.

Pearce, 29, has experience at all four corner positions, though he’s played first base more than any other position. The right-handed hitter has a .254/.333/.396 line this season between the Orioles and Astros, though he also has a .318/.419/.568 line in Triple-A.
