Just a game into the season, and the Buffalo Bills are already dealing with a pair of potentially serious injuries to their starters at skill positions.
NFL Injury Report, AFC East: Fred Jackson, David Nelson Hurt In Bills’ Loss
Most of the AFC East was generally unscathed by injuries, but the Bills may have lost David Nelson for the season while the extent of Fred Jackson’s injury is unknown.
Wide receiver David Nelson and running back Fred Jackson both suffered right knee injuries in the team’s blowout loss at the hands of the New York Jets, with Nelson’s appearing to be the more serious of the two:
“Fred doesn’t look as bad as David,” Gailey told reporters after the game. “We don’t know how bad David is but it doesn’t look good right now. Fred doesn’t look nearly as bad but we’re going to get a further evaluation tomorrow.”
Mike Florio reports that Nelson’s injury is a torn ACL that could cause him to miss the entire season, while Jackson -- who missed significant time after breaking his fibula last season -- apparently has a sprained LCL, although he will undergo an MRI Monday.
Those injuries will obviously be major for the Bills: Nelson was the team’s second-leading receiver last season, and while C.J. Spiller had some nice runs after Jackson left the game, the team needs its star running back to be competitive.
For the Jets, star cornerback Darrelle Revis appeared to suffer a head injury late in the game, but it was not a concussion. Wide receiver Patrick Turner and linebacker Bryan Thomas both left the game with hamstring injuries but will apparently both practice this upcoming week.
The Miami Dolphins also saw a running back go down with injury, as Daniel Thomas suffered a concussion on a hard hit in the second quarter that saw him fumble the ball and put him out of commission for the rest of the game. The status of Reggie Bush’s primary backup is unclear going forward.
The New England Patriots managed to be somewhat injury-free, although Dan Connolly left after a head injury, but like Revis, he also does not have a concussion. Tom Brady might have broken his nose, but he claimed not to be sure, and continued to play with the superficial injury.
