Oregon State vs. Arizona 2012 final score: Beavers narrowly escape Wildcats comeback, 38-35

After a first half controlled by Oregon State, Arizona came out for the second as a new team. The Wildcats scored 21 points in the third quarter giving them the lead. Oregon State wouldn’t lie down and staged a comeback of their own, winning 38-35.

Arizona wasn’t going to go out without a fight. Down to Oregon State 17-7 at the half, ‘Zona came out of the locker room an entirely different team. They found their offense scoring 28 points in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough. Each time Arizona scored, Oregon State would counter with a score of their own, ultimately losing 38-35.

Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion had the better night of the two quarterbacks on the field. Mannion would go 29-for-45 with 433 yards passing, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Nominee for best name ever, running back Storm Woods, carried the ball a team high 29 times for 115 yards and one touchdown.

After last weeks loss to Oregon, Arizona quarterback Matt Scott seems to have lost a little bit of his magic. Whatever head coach Rich Rodriguez said to Scott and his teammates at the half brought back the Arizona that had been seen prior to the loss at Oregon. Scott would end up with 403 yards passing for three touchdowns on the night and 29 yards rushing on five carries. Per usual, running back Ka’Deem Carey would lead the team in rushing with 115 yards for two touchdowns on five carries.

Scott’s only major flaw in the second half would be interceptions. The pressure of the Oregon State defense caused Scott to throw a game-ending interception with less than a minute left.

Box Score Hero: Oregon State’s Markus Wheaton had 166 yards on 10 carries with two touchdowns.

Rankings Ramifications: Arizona came into this game unranked and will remain that way. No. 18 Oregon State won’t feel any seismic shift in either direction. They had to come back a couple times against an unranked team.

But Did They Cover? Even with Oregon State being ranked, Arizona was favored by three. They didn’t need the points.

Next Week’s Schedule:

Oregon State takes on Washington State back home at 6:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 6th.

Arizona heads up to Stanford at 3:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday, October 6th.
