The Baltimore Ravens went into their Divisional round game against the AFC's No. 1 seed as underdogs, and after a 38-35 overtime win against the Denver Broncos, Baltimore players are happy to have a chance to continue their underdog role in the AFC Championship Game.
Ravens players celebrate win, continue to play underdog role
After an upset of the AFC’s top-seeded Denver Broncos, the Baltimore Ravens are thrilled to advance to the AFC Championship Game.
In particular, linebacker Ray Lewis is thankful for the opportunity to keep the playoff run going. Lewis will retire after this season, and he’d love nothing more than to close out a successful NFL career with a second Super Bowl win. The kind of shocking win Baltimore claimed over the Broncos is one of the things Lewis loves about football:
“For us to come in here and win, underdogs, that’s the beautiful thing about sports,” Lewis said. “That’s the thing that I’ll probably miss anything about my career, it will be to listen to what people say you can’t do and then to go do it.”
Following the game, Lewis wasn’t shy about stating the importance of the victory:
“When you look back at it and be able to recap and let the emotions calm down, it will probably be one of the greatest victories in Ravens history. It’s partly because of the way everything was stacked up against us coming in.”
While Baltimore will continue to embrace its underdog role, running back Ray Rice feels that the Ravens’ thrilling comeback win over Denver was a sign that the team can’t lose:
“We are the team of destiny,” Rice said. “I’ll say it again. We are a team of destiny.”
Whether or not Baltimore is a “team of destiny” may be debatable, but one thing is certain: A talented team that feels like it can’t lose is awfully dangerous. The Ravens are happy with their run so far, but they are not yet satisfied:
"To go through what we've gone through the last couple of years, we want to get over the hump," safety Ed Reed said. "The story's still being written."
