Baltimore Ravens sign quarterback Caleb Hanie

The Ravens added a backup for Joe Flacco in veteran Caleb Hanie.

The Baltimore Ravens signed quarterback Caleb Hanie Tuesday, according to ESPN Chicago's Jeff Dickerson. Hanie passed a physical and signed a veteran minimum contract, per Dickerson.

Hanie, a 27-year-old out of Colorado State, signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He spent his first four NFL seasons with Chicago, mostly in a backup role, completing 59-of-116 passes for 679 yards, three touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Hanie signed with the Denver Broncos before the 2012 season, and he didn't appear in a regular-season game for Denver last year.

The Ravens' addition of Hanie is strictly for depth purposes. Baltimore re-signed starting quarterback Joe Flacco to a six-year, $120.6 million deal in early March, and before bringing in Hanie, 23-year-old Tyrod Taylor was the only other signal-caller on the roster. It's likely that if Hanie ever sees significant playing time in 2013, something will have gone terribly wrong for the defending Super Bowl champions.

As a five-year veteran, a minimum one-year contract for Hanie would be worth $715,000 for the 2013 season. That’s an increase of $15,000 from the 2012 minimum for players with four to six years of experience.
