Cardinals rumors: Sedrick Ellis could interest Arizona

The Cardinals are looking for more depth along the defensive line, and are considering bringing in a former top-10 pick.

The Arizona Cardinals are looking to add a defensive/nose tackle through free agency, and could be taking a hard look at Sedrick Ellis, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, according to Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910. The Saints are reportedly unlikely to re-sign Ellis, making him a valued commodity for a team in need.

It’s safe to say that Ellis has underperformed relative to his No. 7 overall selection in the 2007 NFL Draft during his last five seasons in New Orleans. He was known as an excellent pass rusher given his position coming out of USC, but he has yet to be the force many expected. Ellis has just 0.5 sacks over his last two seasons, after recording 12 over his first three years in the NFL, including six in 2010. It shouldn’t be too surprising that the Saints aren’t willing to re-up his contract, factoring in Ellis’ relative ineffectiveness as a run defender.

That said, for a reasonable price Ellis would be considered a decent depth player and potential starter elsewhere. On the Cardinals, he would have a hard time beating out Dan Williams and Darnell Dockett for starter's minutes, but he would likely land on the two-deep. A defense that struggled giving up 4.3 yards per carry during the regular season would benefit from an extra body to rotate into the defensive line.

The Cardinals did not take a defensive tackle in the 2013 NFL Draft, though they did pick up Florida A&M nose tackle Padric Scott as an undrafted free agent.
