The first round of the 2013 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championships got underway on Saturday with four exciting matchups. No. 2 seed Notre Dame was in action, and they managed a solid 9-7 victory over Detroit.

Matt Kavanagh had four goals for Notre Dame, with Conor Doyle and Sean Rogers adding two apiece and Ryan Foley putting up one of his own. All of Kavanagh’s goals came in the second half, giving the Fighting Irish a thrilling come-from-behind victory after trailing 5-1.

Notre Dame advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will take on either Loyola Maryland or No. 7 seed Duke, as those two teams will play on Sunday.

No. 5 North Carolina had the blowout on the day, besting Lehigh 16-7 in their first-round matchup. Chad Tutton and Jimmy Bitter both had three goals and an assist apiece, and continue to be the strong focal point of a Tar Heels team that’s won 10 straight games.

North Carolina will take on No. 4 Denver on May 19, the second day of the quarterfinal matchups. Denver advanced after outlasting Albany en route to a 19-14 victory on Saturday.

No. 8 Penn State saw its season come to an end on Saturday, losing to Yale, 10-7. Penn State had a four-goal lead at halftime, but Yale managed a 9-1 run in the second half to secure the victory. Yale advances to the quarterfinals, where the Bulldogs could end up facing No. 1 Syracuse if they get past Bryant on Sunday.

Syracuse will take on Bryant, Duke will face Loyola-Maryland, Ohio State will battle Towson and Maryland will square off against Cornell on Sunday.
