The 97th running of the Indianapolis 500 takes place Sunday afternoon, and pole-winner Ed Carpenter leads the other 32 drivers vying for a place in history.

Joining Carpenter in Row 1 are Carlos Munoz in second and Marco Andretti in third. Carpenter is the first American to claim the pole position since 2006. Row 2 consists of EJ Viso in fourth, AJ Allmendinger in fifth and Will Power in sixth.

Dario Franchitti, last year’s winner and three-time Indy 500 champion, starts in Row 6 in 17th place with Scott Dixon, a former Indy 500 winner himself, in 16th and Takuma Sato in 18th.

Helio Castroneves, also a three-time champion of the Indy 500, begins this year in eighth, sandwiched by Ryan Hunter-Reay in seventh and James Hinchcliffe in ninth.
