Travelers Championship 2013 leaderboard: Hunter Mahan shoots an early 62

Mahan has given himself a three stroke lead after carding a first round 62 at the Travelers Championship, but there are still a large number of golfers on the course.

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Hunter Mahan got the 2013 Travelers Championship started with a bang on Thursday, recording a 62 in the opening round to lead at 8-under par. Mahan has a three stroke lead over John Merrick, Webb Simpson, Rod Pampling and Camilo Villegas, who all came into the clubhouse at 5-under par.

Mahan managed to get through his first 18 holes at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT without carding a bogey. He birdied three holes on the front nine, then birdied five holes on the back, including three straight at 13, 14 and 15.

Lee Westwood, Jerry Kelly, and Stewart Cink highlight a pack of players five strokes back at 3-under, while John Daly and Bubba Watson are among a group at 2-under. A large portion of the field is still on the course, so there could be a large contingent of players who put up big numbers today.

Here is the current top 10:

Webb Simpson -5 F
Rod Pampling -5 F
