Melbourne Victory joined Western Sydney Wanderers in releasing a new set of kits yesterday, launching theirs via YouTube video. The A-League club has put forth an updated version of its classic navy blue and white home kit but has upset supporters with a new white and sky blue change kit.
Melbourne Victory release 2013/14 kits
A new kit set has created controversy among Victory fans due to the proximity of the change kit’s blue to that of Sydney FC.
Apart from releasing a new home kit that is so similar to last season’s, like Western Sydney, they’ve removed side panels, though the Victory have replaced theirs with a slightly different version instead of a complete elimination. There are also new, striped socks and navy socks accompanying the home shirt, which is a departure from the navy socks and white shorts last year.
But the main focus of fan outrage has come from the change kits. One of two arguments against them have been used, the first being that the colors have been chosen to satisfy the away shirt sponsor Oliana Foods. That may or may not be true, but the color change certainly fits perfectly with that argument. The second, more serious charge from a fan perspective, is that the colors are simply too close to that of Victory’s rivals Sydney FC. It’s difficult to argue with that charge, though the Victory will clearly never wear its change kits against the Sky Blues. Though it should be said, the club did wear its bright yellow change kits nine times last season.
