Mayweather vs Canelo: Golden Boy CEO says fight will be highest grossing PPV ever

The bout between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez will be the highest grossing PPV ever if you listen to Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer.

Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are set to meet in what is the biggest fight in recent memory. While many are comparing the fight to Mayweather’s bout with Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo is coming into this fight as a much bigger star than Floyd was at that point. Mayweather vs. De La Hoya set records that surprised most experts in the boxing world on the strength of HBO’s then innovative 24/7 series.

Mayweather and Alvarez set the Las Vegas gate record back in July, announcing this week that that record had climbed even higher, well over the $20,000,000 mark.

There’s been a debate over the ability of the fight to break the Mayweather/De La Hoya pay-per-view records. As far as Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, is concerned, this will be the highest grossing PPV ever (via Boxing Scene):

I’m am very, very confident to say that this is the highest grossing boxing event of all-time - there is no question about it. The 2.5 [million buy], I’m not prepared to say that [it will be broken],” Schaefer said.

“The gross is bigger than [De La Hoya-Mayweather]. I’m pretty confident that it will be over 2 million [buys], very confident. It will break the highest gross [of $136,000 million by De La Hoya-Mayweather].”

The ability to break the gross on De La Hoya/Mayweather is aided by the fact that the price has been jacked up for the Canelo fight. The event will cost $65 in standard definition and $75 for high definition, a record high for a boxing event.

But the price doesn’t seem to have scared many fans off and Schaefer seems sure that it will break the two million buy mark, no easy feat.
