Mayweather vs Canelo results: Danny Garcia decisions Lucas Matthysse in career performance

In their highly anticipated fight as the semi-main event for Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez, Danny Garcia put on a tremendous performance, beating a very game Lucas Matthysse by decision.

Before Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez hit the ring for their mega-fight, a heavily anticipated fight between Lucas Matthysse and Danny Garcia was on deck on Showtime pay-per-view. Garcia’s father and trainer, Angel, had been outspoken as always heading into the bout, promising that Garcia would win despite his underdog status and guaranteeing that Matthysse’s power couldn’t catch up to him.

While Angel sold the idea that he wasn’t worried about Matthysse’s thunderous power, Garcia did fight early in a way that suggested he was plenty aware of the need for caution.

Matthysse got a few big right hands in late in the first round, making it clear that he was able to land against Garcia early on. Garcia took the punches well and fired his own shots bad, doing plenty of good work while also moving and keeping Matthysse from getting his feet planted.

In round two, both men were opening up more and Matthysse was starting to land his shots, finding a home for his power, but Garcia was returning some good shots of his own.

As a violent, competitive battle emerged, both men had their moments, with SB Nation scoring the bout even through six rounds. In round seven, Matthysse had some swelling around his right eye, which quickly started to close badly. With Matthysse’s eye closed, Garcia started to tee off and was able to avoid, or absorb, the power shots from his foe as he took the bout over.

In round eleven, with Matthysse starting to roar back with fire despite the damaged eye, Garcia clubbed Matthysse behind the head in an exchange, as Matthysse stumbled to the ropes he got caught up, ate a big shot and hit the deck for the first time.

Garcia had landed many low blows through the fight but landed a massive one in the final round that led to finally being deducted a point. At that point it seemed to be too little, too late.

After the 12 rounds, SB Nation had the fight 115-111 for Garcia.

The official scorecards read: 115-111, 114-112 and 114-112 all for Danny Garcia who remained undefeated in the biggest bout of his life.
