Chiefs vs. Jaguars 2013 game recap: Kansas City dominates, 28-2
The Chiefs controlled the Jaguars on both sides of the ball as the Kansas City cruised to a 28-2 win in Jacksonville.
The Chiefs were led by quarterback Alex Smith, who went 21-of-34 for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The veteran spread the ball around to nine different receivers and was aided by a strong running game. Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles ran for 77 yards and one touchdown and added 23 yards through the air. Smith hit Junior Hemingway and Donnie Avery with short-yardage touchdowns and Charles ran in for the score to take a commanding 21-2 lead heading into halftime.
The Chiefs defense was equally impressive in the matchup, bringing down quarterback Blaine Gabbert six times in addition to two interceptions. Outside linebacker Justin Houston was the star of the defense, sacking Gabbert three times. Cornerback Brandon Flowers contributed an interception that went for a long return. Tamba Hali also intercepted Gabbert and took it back for a touchdown, increasing the Chiefs' lead to 28-2 in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars were less impressive on offense and defense, but played well on special teams. Jacksonville took an early lead with a blocked punt that rolled into the back of the end zone for a touchback. The touchback created what would the Jags’ only points of the game. Jacksonville offered little resistance on defense as the Chiefs easily scored three touchdowns early on the home team.
Gabbert had a forgettable outing, completing 16-of-35 passes for 121 yards and two interceptions. At times, he looked completely lost and threw both of his interceptions directly to Chiefs players. Running back Maurice Jones-Drew did little to help with 46 rushing yards, but that is mostly due to large lead by the Chiefs. Punter Bryan Anger broke the Jaguars' franchise record for punts with 11 attempts.
The Jaguars moved to 0-1 and the Chiefs are now 1-0.
Fantasy studs and duds
The Chiefs’ defense was all over the Jaguars and their stats showed it. The Chiefs had six totals sacks and two inceptions, one of which went for a touchdown.
Jaguars’ wide receiver Cecil Shorts was held to just three catches for 40 yards. Those stats are going to make anyone happy, let alone his fantasy owners.
Injury report
Chiefs’ running back Jamaal Charles left the game with a quad injury.
