Fantasy football waiver wire, Week 9: Injuries and potential replacements

Fantasy owners may have lost Jordan Cameron for Week 8. Here’s a quick-hit breakdown of the fantasy injuries.

Ron Schwane-USA TODAY Sports

This week wasn’t as bad as last week, but there are several injuries to the running back position. Giovani Bernard is the most notable, while Doug Martin continues what has been a nightmare season for him.

The wide receiver position featured some players that have been a bit more under the radar this season. Brian Quick and Cordarrelle Patterson were the two most notable injuries on Sunday. Quick is expected to be out for the rest of the season, while Patterson remains more of a question mark. The St. Louis Rams are not exactly an offensive powerhouse, so guys like Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey have only moderate value.

The quarterback position will be a fun one to watch this week with Robert Griffin III making his return at some point. He has been dropped in quite a few leagues, currently owned in only 36 percent of Yahoo! leagues. He has been inconsistent when healthy, but his potential remains undeniable. He is a nice stash option.

The following is a list of the fantasy-football relevant injuries. The injuries from Week 8 are on top with the older injuries below:

Running back

Who: Giovani Bernard, Cincinnati Bengals
What
: Missed most of the fourth quarter because of a hip issue
Impact
: Even if it's minor, Jeremy Hill should be owned in all leagues.

Who: Doug Martin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What
: A sprained ankle kept him from playing in the fourth quarter on Sunday
Impact
: He has been awful, so fantasy owners might want to stash running back Charles Sims

Who: Stepfan Taylor, Arizona Cardinals
What: Did not return to action on Sunday because of a calf strain
Impact: Andre Ellington didn't have to give Taylor the goal-line touches, and it allowed Marion Grice to get some work. This should be a major impact on your fantasy lineups.

Wide receivers

Who: Brian Quick, St. Louis Rams
What: A shoulder injury will keep him out for the rest of the season
Impact: He was the best receiving option, so now the team will have to turn to Kenny Britt and Stedman Bailey. Jared Cook also gets a bump.

Who: Cordarrelle Patterson, Minnesota Vikings
What: Suffered a foot injury and left the stadium in a walking boot
Impact: It doesn't sound serious, but his owners will want to keep an eye on his status. He's also an interesting buy-low target, assuming you're giving up next to nothing — Teddy Bridgewater is checking down too much.

Who: Nate Washington, Tennessee Titans
What: Sprained AC joint in his shoulder should cost him some time
Impact: Justin Hunter is coming on and this is another reason to like him. He's one of the best adds you can make off the wire.

Who: Robert Woods, Buffalo Bills
What: Suffered a back injury after playing well
Impact: Sammy Watkins had a field day while Chris Hogan and Mike Williams also will benefit. Williams is the better pickup.

Tight End

Who: Jordan Cameron, Cleveland Browns
What: A concussion could keep him out against the Bucs in Week 9
Impact: Jim Dray has stepped up, but he is only an option in two-TE leagues. Cameron owners might want to line up a backup plan.

Quarterback

Who: Robert Griffin III, Washington
What: Targeting Week 9 return
Impact: He's worth picking up in almost all leagues.

Who: Matt Cassel, Minnesota Vikings
What: Out indefinitely with a broken foot
Impact: Teddy Time is checking down too much, so Bridgewater's QB2 in any matchup.

Who: Josh McCown, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
What: Could miss several weeks with sprained thumb
Impact: Mike Glennon will likely start the test of the way.

Who: Jake Locker, Tennessee Titans
What: Injured right thumb
Impact: Zach Mettenberger will start the rest of the way.

Running back

Who: C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills
What: Spiller broke his collarbone and is expected to be out for the season; Jackson has a groin strain and is expected to miss three more weeks
Impact: Anthony Dixon saw 22 carries, while Brown saw seven. This is likely going to even out as the season goes on. Of course, make sure Jackson is stashed everywhere.

Who: Trent Richardson, Indianapolis Colts
What: Pulled his hamstring in Week 7, was a healthy scratch in Week 8
Impact: Dan Herron saw some carries, but Ahmad Bradshaw is rolling as a must-start play.

Who: Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints
What: Suffered a shoulder injury in Week 7 and missed Week 8
Impact: It's Mark Ingram's world.

Who: Stevan Ridley, New England Patriots
What: Out for season with knee injury
Impact: Shane Vereen is playing well, but this team will be very pass-happy. You can ignore the rest.

Who: Darren Sproles, Philadelphia Eagles
What: MCL injury; missed Week 8
Impact: He should be ready to go for Week 9

Who: Rashad Jennings, New York Giants
What: Suffered a knee sprain and has been out since Week 5
Impact: Andre Williams should be in the lineup for the next two weeks.

Who: Montee Ball, Denver Broncos
What: Expected to miss multiple weeks with a groin issue and has lost his job
Impact: He has lost his job to Ronnie Hillman

Who: Donald Brown, Danny Woodhead and Ryan Mathews, San Diego Chargers
What: Brown suffered a concussion in Week 5 and is still not practicing; Woodhead is out for the season with a broken fibula; Mathews is still not practicing and is not ready to return
Impact: Branden Oliver is a must-start back as long as Mathews is out.

Wide receivers

Who: Victor Cruz, New York Giants
What: Out for season with knee injury
Impact: As expected, Larry Donnell, Odell Beckham and Rueben Randle saw upticks in value. They're all must-own, with Randle as the most valuable. For what it's worth, Beckham is a sell-high, and it's highly unlikely he scores twice in a game again this season.

Who: A.J. Green and Marvin Jones, Cincinnati Bengals
What: Green expected to return in Week 9 with toe issue; Jones is out for the season
Impact: Mohamed Sanu picked it back up, but he'll take a backseat with Green back. You're obviously starting Green if he's out there.

Who: Rod Streater, Oakland Raiders
What: Out indefinitely with fractured foot
Impact: Andre Holmes had a nice garbage TD, but James Jones has been quiet. These guys are more of a matchup play than regular WR3s.

Who: Harry Douglas, Atlanta Falcons
What: Out with a foot issue
Impact: He won't have much value while the rest of the Falcon receivers are healthy.

Tight end

Who: Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings
What: Out two or more weeks with groin injury
Impact: He is worth a look if you're desperate.

Who: Tyler Eifert, Cincinnati Bengals
What: Not expected to return until Week 11 with elbow injury
Impact: Jermaine Gresham catches a lot of balls, but he can't do anything. He drops a lot of balls, too.
