Michael Phelps says he will "take some time away" from swimming to focus on himself, after he was arrested on Tuesday for driving under the influence. He made the announcement on Sunday in a series of tweets.

The 29-year-old,18-time Olympic gold medalist admitted on Twitter that the arrest wasn’t his first lapse in judgement and said he will “attend a program” as part of a way to learn from the experience.

Phelps was previously arrested in November 2004 for driving under the influence at the age of 19. He pleaded guilty to a driving while impaired charge and was granted 18 months probation along with a fine and community service.

He also nabbed headlines in 2009 when a photo was published that showed him smoking from a bong.

After retiring from the sport following the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps has made a return, but hasn’t announced intentions to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is the most decorated Olympian of all-time with 18 gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
