If you watched the fight on Saturday between Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri it wasn’t a surprise that Pacquiao came away with the victory. Instead, the most surprising aspect of the result is the fight went to a decision. Pacquiao came out strong early and didn’t relent on his way to a dominating victory.

The win, which came by 119-103, 119-103, 120-102 scores, included six knockdowns. It appeared Pacquiao was going to end the fight in the ninth round when he knocked Algieri down with strong shot. Algieri was able to get up and continue the fight, but went down to the mat again not long after. Following an eight-count, Algieri got up again and continued the fight. Despite Pacquiao’s efforts, he couldn’t score the knockout and instead had to settle for a lopsided decision victory.

Pacquiao scores 6 knockdowns, wins decision

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

The decline in Manny Pacquiao’s power has always been overstated, even with his recent drought of knockouts he has been hitting and hurting big opponents with really good chins for years. Tonight was another case of him not scoring a knockout but hurting his opponent several times.

Against Chris Algieri, Pacquiao scored six knockdowns, giving him a huge cushion on the scorecards. There were a couple knockdowns that seemed like they were the result of Algieri slipping on a wet logo in the corner, but he still was clearly not talented enough to compete with one of the very best fighters of his era.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 10

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Manny Pacquiao has been knocking Chris Algieri down repeatedly heading into the 10th round of their HBO pay-per-view bout. Still, Algieri’s corner insists that they’re where they want to be and that he’ll be knocking out the champion sometime soon.

Again, Algieri was caught with some big punches, and eventually he was knocked down by a right hand from Pacquiao.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 8

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Chris Algieri is in a huge hole coming into round eight against Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is able to land the bigger shots every round, and Algieri has no real power that can keep Pacquiao from feeling able to charge in and land big shots.

The eighth is playing out much the same way, with Algieri is landing the occasional jab or right hand but Pacquiao has landed 122 punches to Algieri’s 66 according to the live punch stats.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 7

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Chris Algieri is almost a lock to lose his fight with Manny Pacquiao at the halfway point of the fight. After suffering three knockdowns, and with no real knockout power, Algieri has very few avenues to victory left.

Pacquiao came out and landed some good punches as Algieri tried to find space to make something happen, but he really had no success in getting any effective offense.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 6

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Chris Algieri seemed to win round five in the eyes of most (though not on the HBO unofficial scorecard) against Manny Pacquiao. He came out in round six needing to continue that, if not build on it.

Early in the round he was doing so, but then Pacquiao landed a few hard shots and got Algieri backing up and running away.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 4

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Manny Pacquiao is slowly building a lead in his bout with Chris Algieri coming into round four. It looked like more of the same to begin round four, with Pacquiao coming forward hard, landing some good shots and using his hand speed to get off.

Pacquiao would land a huge uppercut that hurt Algieri and tagged him a few more times, but Algieri was able to keep upright through the flurry and look to land a couple punches.

    Pacquiao vs Algieri: Round 2

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Manny Pacquiao had a very good first round against Chris Algieri and came out in the second round looking to build on that.

Pacquiao was able to continue to build quite successfully and then caused some swelling around Algieri’s eye. During the round, as Pacquiao came forward with a punch, it appeared that Algieri slipped on a wet logo in the corner as Pacquiao landed a punch. As he fell, the referee counted what looked like a slip as a knockdown, spotting Pacquiao another point on the cards.

Zou Shiming wins on Pacquiao vs Algieri undercard

    Chris Hyde/Getty Images

Zou Shiming was the local boy in Macao for the HBO pay-per-view card headlined by Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri and he didn’t disappoint fans, picking up a lopsided decision victory over Kwanpichit OnesongchaiGym.

The fight looked like it would be a total walk for Shiming as he dropped OnesongchaiGym multiple times early in the fight, but he wasn’t able to get his foe out with a stoppage. OnesongchaiGym would also lose a point due to repeated low blows, but that hardly mattered as it was clear he wouldn’t be able to win on the cards.

Jessie Vargas wins on Pacquiao vs Algieri PPV

    Ethan Miller/Getty Images

Jessie Vargas and Antonio DeMarco opened up the main card broadcast for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Chris Algieri pay-per-view with a very entertaining fight. Vargas, now under the training of boxing legend Roy Jones Jr, looked very confident in his power punching, really sitting down on his big shots and slowing DeMarco’s aggression during the early and middle rounds.

DeMarco isn’t a particularly dynamic fighter, so he didn’t back down for long, eventually returning with his own power shots. It felt that the fight was likely getting away from him, however, as the rounds seemed to continue to pile up for Vargas.

Pacquiao a comfortable favorite over Algieri

When Manny Pacquiao steps into the ring tomorrow to face undefeated Chris Algieri, he’ll do it as a comfortable favorite at the betting window.

Algieri has the benefit of “being a winner;” in addition to having never lost as a professional boxer, he retired from kickboxing as a world champion at the age of 23 and was a champion wrestler in high school. That experience under fire in multiple sports is likely what allowed him to remain level headed against Ruslan Provodnikov, despite being a big underdog and getting knocked down twice in the first round. Algieri managed to work his way to a split decision victory in that fight to earn his shot at Pacquiao.
