Cam Newton calls Panthers fans ‘classless’ for cheering Johnny Manziel injury

Cam Newton disapproved of Panthers fans who cheered after Johnny Manziel went down with a leg injury during the second quarter of Sunday’s game.

Cam Newton was upset with Carolina Panthers fans Sunday after they allegedly cheered when Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel left the game with an injury. Newton called the fans "classless," according to ESPN, adding, "We don't celebrate (that)."

Manziel went down with a leg injury in the second quarter after taking a hard hit on a scramble near the sideline. He limped toward the sideline and into the locker room with a towel draped over his head. Newton heard the cheering when Manziel left, and disapproved.

Newton and Manziel share a few similarities as quarterbacks. Both were Heisman-winning first-round draft picks, and both rely on their dual threat capabilities on the field. Manziel is still trying to prove himself as a rookie, however, whereas Newton has already established as the leader of the Panthers’ offense and one of the better players at this position in the NFL.

Newton went 18 of 31 passing for 201 yards, one touchdown and one interception, adding 63 yards and a rushing touchdown on 12 carries in the Panthers' win. Manziel went 3 of 8 for 32 yards before being replaced by Brian Hoyer.
