2014 Winter Olympics women’s hockey results: Sweden shuts down Germany, 4-0

Sweden used a three goal outburst in the third period to slip past Germany and into the top spot in Group B.

SB Nation 2014 Olympics PreviewKim Martin Hasson stopped all 21 shots faced against Germany to record the second shutout in as many games for Team Sweden in a 4-0 win over Germany on Tuesday in Sochi.

Germany had held Russia to just one goal through two periods in the first game of the tournament before eventually allowing three goals in the final frame in a 4-1 loss. Germany was hoping to build off that promising performance with a strong start on Tuesday, yet Sweden’s Nordin Emma opened the scoring just one minute into the game and put the underdogs on the chase.

Germany would play a spirited game and tightened up defensively, creating several chances in transition and drawing two penalties in the opening frame yet were unable to get anything past Swedish netminder Kim Martin Hasson.

Unfortunately for Germany, the third period on Tuesday played out almost exactly as the game against Russia. Unable to take advantage of a clear breakaway and a separate 2-on-1 chance early in the final frame, the Germans squandered their chance to pull even with the superior Swedes. Cecilia Ostberg then gave Sweden a 2-0 lead just over seven minutes into the third, followed by two more quick goals just over a minute apart and suddenly Germany was facing an insurmountable 4-0 deficit.

The win was huge for Sweden, especially with the three-goal outburst in the third, as the win pulls them ahead of Russia in Group B with a 2-0-0-0 record and a pristine 5-0 goal differential for the tournament. Russia faces Japan, who held Sweden to just one goal, at 10 am ET on Tuesday on MSNBC.
