Sochi 2014: What to watch for on Day 14

There’s a lot of action in the Winter Olympics on Wednesday. Men’s ice hockey gets underway with the quarterfinal round, with both the U.S. and Canada featuring prominently. Figure skating has the women’s individual short program, with a ton of intriguing storylines. In curling, the men’s and women’s semifinal round takes place, and an American bobsledder is looking to make Olympic history.

Here are the top events to watch on Day 14.

The quarterfinal round begins, and the top two teams in the tournament are heading for a potential showdown in the semifinals. The United States and Canada both start at 12 p.m. ET, and if both teams win, they’ll be facing off in a rematch of their epic gold medal game in Vancouver. But first, they have to get past their respective opponents -- the U.S. plays Czech Republic and Canada takes on Latvia.

The women’s individual competition, possibly the most anticipated event of the Olympics, begins today with the short program at 10 a.m. South Korea’s Yuna Kim and Japan’s Mao Asada finished 1-2 in Vancouver and have been getting all the headlines before the games, but both have been thoroughly upstaged by Russian newcomer Yulia Lipnitskaia. The 15-year-old turned heads during the team event, helping her home country win the gold and cementing herself as a force to be reckoned with. Meanwhile, Americans Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner are hoping to get some attention of their own. It should be a fascinating event to watch.

Great Britain and Norway had an incredible tiebreaker game on Tuesday that’s already considered an instant classic. That set the bar pretty high for the semifinal rounds, but there should still be some excellent curling on hand Wednesday. On the men’s side, the British will try to keep their run going against Sweden, while defending gold medalists Canada face China. Both games start at 10 a.m.

The women’s teams had their first two runs on Tuesday and wrap things up with the medal runs Wednesday. Americans Lauryn Williams and Elana Meyers lead the way at the halfway mark, with Williams hoping to become just the second Olympic athlete to win a gold medal in both the Summer and Winter games. Fan favorite Lolo Jones is another dual-threat athlete this year, but she finds herself in a distant 11th place with teammate Jazmine Fenlator. The runs start at 11:15 a.m.
