Sochi 2014 Olympics Speed skating results: Martina Sablikova breaks Dutch dominance
The Netherlands had won six medals of nine events in speed skating going into Thursday. The Czech speed demon didn’t care.
The Dutch hold on the speed skating discipline in the 2014 Olympic Games has been nothing short of historic. Going into Wednesday’s women’s 5000m final, the Oranje have taken 19 of 27 possible medals, including six of nine golds. Martina Sablikova was having none of that.
The Czech skater won silver in the 3000m, bested by Ireen Wust of the Netherlands. In the 5000m, however, Sablikova turned the tables.
Sablikova won gold with a time of 6:51.54 minutes. Wust was stuck with the silver after turning in a 6:54.28 (+2.74 seconds) time. Carien Kleibeuker -- also of the Netherlands -- received a bronze medal for her 6:55.66 (+4.12) effort. The only American in the finals, Maria Lamb, finished in last place with a 7:29.64 (+38.10) skate.
The Dutch did manage to carry the silver and bronze medals, so their medal total proportion was not too-badly scarred. And Sablikova, winner of the 5000m in Vancouver 2010, is no modest upstart.
