Earning a top spot in the medal standings is something that’s evaded Canada for much of the Sochi games, but a late surge puts them in the conversation. The ice breaker came at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Friday, with the Canadians capturing gold and silver in Ladies’ Ski Cross.

Marielle Thompson was one of the favorites in the event after finishing second in the FIS World Championships in Norway, but the Ski Cross can be an unpredictable event thanks to the jostling for position that often sees top-notch skiers fall by the wayside. The 21-year-old Canadian earned the third seed earlier in the day and went on to win every race en route to the first Olympic medal of her career.

The podium evaded countrywoman Kelsey Serwa in Vancouver when she finished in fifth, but Serwa wouldn’t be denied on Friday. She had a spectacular set of runs and entered the finals as the top seed, only to come in just short to Thompson. It was a fantastic day for Canada on the slopes and the country now finds itself in the top bracket of medals following the two on Friday, paired with the gutsy win in Women’s Ice Hockey on Thursday.

It was a difficult day on the slopes for reigning world champion Fanny Smith of Switzerland, who looked uncomfortable throughout the day. She never found her groove at Sochi, placing no higher than second in her races and finishing fourth in the small final.

Full results from the Ladies’ Ski Cross can be found here, but these are your top five finishers.
