2014 Olympic skiing results: Bode Miller finishes 8th in Men’s Downhill
Miller finished eighth and failed to medal after really impressing during his practice runs throughout the week. Matthias Mayer won gold in downhill, while Anastasiya Kuzmina won gold in the Biathlon for the second Olympics in a row.
There were 12 medals up for grabs in the Men’s Downhill, the Men’s 15 km Skiathlon, the Women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Sprint and the Men’s Normal Hill Ski Jump on Sunday morning.
Men’s Downhill
Bode Miller came into Sunday’s event as one of the favorites to medal after an impressive week of practice. He struggled and would end up finishing eighth in 2:06.75, close to a half-second behind gold medal winner Matthias Mayer of Austria. Mayer finished in 2:06.23. Behind him was Italy’s Christof Innerhofer for the silver medal, while Kjetil Jansrud of Norway took home bronze.

Ganong missed medaling by about three-tenths of a second. Miller was eighth, Steven Nyman was 27th and Marco Sullivan came in 30th.

Men’s 15 km Skiathlon
Few events in the Olympics are as physically demanding as the Skiathlon is. On Sunday, Dario Cologna of Switzerland shined in the final freestyle portion to narrowly win the gold medal in 1:08:15.4. Cologna finished four-tenths of a second better than Sweden’s Marcus Hellner, who will take home the silver medal for his valiant effort.
Where the real drama came was the bronze medal. Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway finished his run in 1:08:16.8. Maxim Vylegzhanin of Russia, who had the crowd fully behind him down the stretch, crossed the finish line in 1:08:16.9. In the time it takes to blink an eye, Sundby won bronze over Vylegzhanin.
The Americans did not fare too well in this event. Noah Hoffman was the best finisher in 35th place, nearly four-and-a-half minutes behind Cologna. Erik Bjornsen placed 42nd, Brian Gregg placed 47th and Kris Freeman rounded out the group in 54th place.

Women’s 7.5 km Biathlon Sprint
In what was one of the more dominating performances of the day, Anastasiya Kuzmina of Slovakia took home gold with a time of 21:06.8. That was nearly 20 seconds better than any other woman competing. Kuzmina has now won back-to-back gold medals in the event after winning in Vancouver four years ago.
Hometown favorite Olga Vilukhina won the silver medal after crossing the finish line in 21:26.7. Vita Semerenko of Ukraine finished right behind Vilukhina to win bronze.
Five members of Team USA participated in the sprint, though Susan Dunklee (14th) was the lone American to finish in the top-40.

Men’s Normal Hill Ski Jump
With 31 jumpers making it to the final round, there was quite the wait on the hill in order for a champion to be crowned. In the end it was Kamil Stoch of Poland who came out on top with 278 points total. His first jump sent him soaring 105.5 meters, setting him up nicely for a comfortable finish.
Peter Prevc of Slovakia took home silver with 265.3 points. Anders Bardal of Norway won bronze. Thomas Diethart and Michael Hayboeck of Austria just missed out on winning a medal, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
