The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana will go ahead as planned after a standoff over glove choice that began last night.
Mayweather vs. Maidana glove controversy ends, fight to go on as expected
The standoff over which gloves Marcos Maidana would wear for his fight with Floyd Mayweather has come to an end and the fight will go ahead as planned.
The Mayweather camp objected to a pair of custom Everlast MX gloves that Maidana planned to wear for the bout, stating that the padding didn’t cover the knuckles adequately. The gloves were not approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. A pair of “standard” Everlast MX gloves was approved, however.
The Mayweather camp continued to object to the Everlast gloves, even though approved by the only body that actually had a say. They also objected to the Maidana camp proposed alternate of Reyes gloves.
After stating that they wouldn’t fight if they didn’t get their way, it is now all resolved, with everyone seemingly back to the expected handwear.
Mayweather will wear his preferred Grant gloves, good for those with a history of hand injuries, something that has plagued ‘Money’ throughout his career.
Maidana...will wear Everlast.
So, the fight goes on, the gloves that should have been thrown out were thrown out and everyone still gets to wear the brand they prefer.
