The 49ers could be without tight end Vernon Davis for the second half of San Francisco's game against Philadelphia. Davis, who is returning from a week on the bench with an ankle injury, left the game with an apparent back injury after getting hit by Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans.
49ers Vernon Davis leaves game with an apparent back injury
49ers tight end Vernon Davis left San Francisco’s game against the Eagles with a lower back injury.
Vernon Davis wincing in pain, fell to the ground after grabbing his lower back. Limping off with a trainer.
— Around The NFL (@AroundTheNFL) September 28, 2014 Davis headed to the locker room, walking slowly. He's had a history of injuries, suffering a hamstring injury and a concussion in 2013. The 49ers have also lost right tackle Anthony Davis to a leg injury today. Davis' injury will once again test the 49ers depth at tight end. Backup Vance McDonald missed his second-straight game with a knee injury. Without Davis and McDonald, third-string tight end Derek Carrier has been thrust into a much bigger role. He played significant snaps last week when both Davis and McDonald sat out due to injuries. There isn't much healthy depth behind Carrier. Fullback Bruce Miller could play TE if needed, while long snapper Kyle Nelson also has some experience there.

— Niners Nation (@NinersNation) September 28, 2014 If Davis’ injury is serious, the 49ers will likely need to make a move to add some depth. Tight End Asante Cleveland is currently on San Francisco’s practice squad. He was added to the active roster last week, before being moved back to the practice squad this week. He may be in line to get re-signed to the active roster.
