CB Buster Skrine signs with Jets

The Jets bolstered their secondary Tuesday, though perhaps not how many expected.

Former Cleveland Browns cornerback Buster Skrine signed with the New York Jets shortly after the start of NFL free agency, according to ESPN. Skrine's deal is reportedly worth $25 million over four years, including $13 million in guarantees.

The Jets were hoping to make a splash in free agency by adding to the secondary. Rumors tied them to Darrelle Revis, the veteran who has spent most of his career in New York and was recently sent into the free agent market by the New England Patriots. The Jets may still be pursuit of Revis, but in the mean time they have added Skrine to provide depth.

Skrine was the Browns' second cornerback behind Joe Haden last season, and as a result he saw a lot of balls thrown his way. The results were mixed. Though Skrine's attitude was often praised by coaches, he was also one of the most heavily penalized players in the NFL and fared relatively poorly in coverage. According to Pro Football Focus, opposing quarterbacks had an 86.9 passer rating when going against him.

The Jets’ secondary as a unit, however, was much worse than Skrine, giving up an average quarterback rating of 101.5 to opponents. Whatever Skrine’s deficiencies, he should help the Jets save face on defense in 2015.
