The Cleveland Browns do not want to participate in HBO's Hard Knocks this summer. The team was considered a front-runner to be the subject of the documentary series by NFL Films, but declined the opportunity to volunteer due to the attention it invites during training camp. Specifically, the Browns worried about the additional scrutiny on quarterback Johnny Manziel.
Browns decline ‘Hard Knocks’ out of worry for Johnny Manziel
Head coach Mike Pettine said the Browns were looking out for their second-year quarterback when they declined to volunteer for HBO’s “Hard Knocks” this summer.
“You just weigh everything in,” head coach Mike Pettine told ESPN at the NFL owners meeting. “Because being a part of Hard Knocks, having been there, knowing they’re going to look to cover the team’s biggest current storylines, it’s obvious that [Manziel] would be a point of attention.”
Manziel is currently in a treatment facility. Though the exact reason for his stint is unknown, the quarterback had a reputation for living a party lifestyle in college at Texas A&M and during his rookie season in Cleveland. In a statement, his publicist said that Manziel entered treatment to be a “better family member, friend and teammate.”

Pettine is familiar with Hard Knocks, having participated in 2010 as the defensive coordinator of the New York Jets. The show documents training camp for one team every year, highlighting drama wherever it can.
“When we decided not to volunteer for Hard Knocks, we discussed everything that was involved with it,” Pettine said. “[Manziel] is certainly something we needed to consider.”
Pettine said that no official date has been set for Manziel's return, but the quarterback is expected to be present for the start of offseason workouts on April 20. Manziel is coming off a forgettable rookie season after being made Cleveland's No. 22 overall pick in 2014. In five appearances, he went just 18-for-35 passing for 175 yards and two interceptions. His season ended with hamstring injury in Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers.
The Browns are no doubt expecting to have a rejuvenated Manziel this season. As he tries to regain his focus, it’s no surprise the Browns would rather not have cameras present. The NFL could force the Browns to do the show, but would prefer to have a team volunteer.
