American Pharoah won despite a bad draw in the Kentucky Derby. What will the Preakness draw present the Triple Crown hopeful?
post positions update
No horse has won the Triple Crown since Affirmed did so in 1978. American Pharoah won the Kentucky Derby with an easy surge in the homestretch, and he’ll likely be named the morning line favorite of the Preakness following Wednesday evening’s post position draw from Pimlico.
Last year, California Chrome cruised in the Kentucky Derby but drew an unfavorable inside post, the No. 3 gate, in the Preakness. Still, Chrome cruised out of traffic with a clean start from his inside starting position and won by 1 1/2 lengths.
American Pharoah proved at Churchill Downs he could overcome a bad starting position. He started out of the 18th gate and became just the fourth horse since 1930 to win the Kentucky Derby starting from the No. 17 gate or further out.
The post position draw will take place at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
