Preakness 2015 undercard stakes preview: There’s plenty to watch Saturday from Pimlico

A crowded field in the Dixie Stakes highlights the Preakness undercard.

The Preakness Stakes certainly is the headliner Saturday from Pimlico -- it’s arguably the headliner of horse racing’s entire calendar except for the Kentucky Derby -- but by the time American Pharoah and seven other horses post just after 6:15 p.m. ET, 12 other races will have been run.

Even including the Preakness -- which has a heavy favorite and only eight horses total on a 1 3/16-mile track -- the Grade II Dixie Stakes may have the day’s most crowded and contentious field. Run on the grass at 1 1/16 miles, the $400,000 race for three-year-olds and up features a field full of contenders: The race is full at 14 horses, including several stakes winners and even Skywire, a five-year-old that won the Dixie Stakes in 2013 at age three.

The Dixie Stakes posts at 5:25 p.m. ET.

In all, eight of the 14 races Saturday at Pimlico are stakes, including the Grade I Preakness (race 13), the Grade II Dixie (race 12) and a pair of Grade IIIs in the Maryland Sprint (race 5) and the Gallorette (race 9).

NBCSN’s coverage from Pimlico begins at 2:30 p.m. ET, which switches to NBC at 4:30 p.m. ET. All of the coverage from the day will be available to stream on NBC Sports Live Extra’s website and mobile app.
