The most exciting two minutes in sports takes place Saturday. It’s the Kentucky Derby, an event special in its history and spectacle that is ramped up this year because of the competition among the horses.

Don’t miss horse racing’s biggest moment.
American Pharoah is the favorite, and he’ll start from the No. 17 post at 5/2 odds. (No horse has won the Kentucky Derby from the No. 17 pot since Churchill Downs brought in a starting gate in 1930.) His ability to overcome the large field and far-flung starting position is undoubted, but that he’s not proven an ability to overcome adversity in competition is keeping his odds from dipping even further.
American Pharoah is undefeated, winning each of his races by an increasingly wide margin. His last time out, he won by eight lengths at the Arkansas Derby. He’s created his own fate, which means he hasn’t yet had to fight from behind.
NBC Sports Live Extra will stream from Churchill Downs starting at noon ET all the way through the 6:25 p.m. Run for the Roses and post-race coverage.
