The 2015 Kentucky Derby is upon us. California Chrome came so close to horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978, but he finished a distant fourth to keep the Triple Crown vacated.

Can the favorite win the Kentucky Derby for the second year in a row?
Since that disappointing finish at Belmont Park, horse racing has been thinking about Churchill Downs, and a favorite has emerged: American Pharoah. The Bob Baffert-trained colt is fast, but he’ll deal with a significant handicap by starting in the far-outside No. 17 gate. No horse has ever won the Run for the Roses from the 17th gate -- the only gate of the 20 without a champion -- since Churchill Downs began using a starting gate in 1930.
If American Pharoah were to become the first to win from the No. 17 gate, he’d have to do so over a stacked field that includes, among other threats, a proven runner in traffic: Bob Baffert’s other entrant, Dortmund. Carpe Diem is also a popular choice and is the strongest among four horses in the field trained by Todd Pletcher, but Carpe Diem will have a significant hill to climb fighting through traffic on the inside rail from his No. 2 starting gate.
