American Pharoah captured the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs, staving off Firing Line and Dortmund down the stretch.
Kentucky Derby payouts 2015: American Pharoah takes the big prize
American Pharoah had 3-1 odds to win the race, and was ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza. This was Espinoza’s third Kentucky Derby win, and second straight. Firing Line was the runner-up, while Dortmund finished third.
Per the NBC broadcast, over $50 million was wagered on this year’s Run for the Roses. American Pharoah paid $7.80 to win, $5.80 to place and $4.20 to show.
The 2015 Kentucky Derby carries with it a minimum guaranteed purse of $2 million, with 62 percent going to the winner. Here are the minimum guaranteed payouts for the top five finishers:
1. American Pharoah - $1,240,000
2. Firing Line - $400,000
3. Dortmund - $200,000
4. Frosted - $100,000
5. Danzig Moon - $60,000
