Pharaoh is a word for an ancient Egyptian ruler. “Pharoah,” as in the horse’s name, is not that word or a word at all, but it is probably the most common misspelling of that word. This is very confusing and made for a lot of incorrectly correct race summaries:
So what’s the deal? Why is the fastest horse at the Derby such a nightmare for copy editors? It’s a real mistake, and it just got passed up the chain.

Espinoza’s story is a great one: The 11th of 12 siblings on a Hidalgo, Mexico dairy farm he took a job as a busdriver in Mexico City to pay for jockey school. Now he’s on top of the horse-racing world -- it’s his third Derby win and second in as many years after riding California Chrome to a win last year. He’s a great guy, too -- he donates 10 percent of his winnings to City of Hope, a pediatric cancer research foundation.

American Pharoah captured the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs, staving off Firing Line and Dortmund down the stretch.
American Pharoah had 3-1 odds to win the race, and was ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza. This was Espinoza’s third Kentucky Derby win, and second straight. Firing Line was the runner-up, while Dortmund finished third.

American Pharoah outran a solid field to win the 2015 Kentucky Derby and become the latest horse to claim the “Run for the Roses” and the first leg of a possible Triple Crown. Dortmund helped set the early pace of the race after breaking well. American Pharoah wasn’t far behind, sitting in fourth in the early going. Dortmund led coming up the back stretch with Firing Line in second and American Pharoah in third. Firing Line made the first move, with American Pharoah also making a strong move. The three horses came down to the wire with American Pharoah just having enough to edge out Firing Line for the win. The victory gives Victor Espinoza back-to-back Kentucky Derby wins

American Pharoah currently sits as the betting favorite, getting 3-1 odds, while Dortmund is close behind at 4-1. No other horses are under 5-1, though Carpe Diem is third at 7-1, and Frosted and Firing Line come in at 9-1.

American Pharoah is at 13/5 odds to win the race entering Saturday, per Odds Shark, slightly different than the 5/2 odds the horse was getting on Friday morning. Dortmund is next at 15/4 odds to win, followed by Carpe Diem at 8/1.
