Pacquiao has ‘significant tear’ in right shoulder

    Al Bello/Getty Images

Manny Pacquiao will undergo surgery for a torn right rotator cuff with the injury described as a “significant tear,” according to a report from Dan Rafael of ESPN. Pacquiao suffered the tear while training for his fight against Floyd Mayweather and the tear was confirmed during a MRI following the fight.

The injury will keep Pacquiao out of the ring for the foreseeable future -- he’s expected to need between nine and 12 months of rehabilitation following surgery. Pacquiao suffered the injury roughly three weeks before the fight against Mayweather. Both he and trainer Freddie Roach said the injury had improved leading up to the fight and that was the reason they continued on instead of pulling out of the bout.

Mayweather to give up all title belts

    Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

After adding another belt by beating Manny Pacquiao over the weekend, Floyd Mayweather will relinquish his various boxing titles and put an end to his official status as a champion.

After the fight, Mayweather said he would probably relinquish the titles Monday, but he eventually backtracked and said it would be in the coming weeks. Either way, it’s clear he wants the final match of his career to be a non-title belt fight.

    You’re a chump for paying for Mayweather-Pacquiao

    Harry How/Getty Images

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was billed as the fight of the century. In reality, it was boring as hell. Mayweather conservatively and methodically dominated. Pacquiao was hopeless, mainly punching the air, and he revealed after the fight he had an injured shoulder.

Following a five-year build up, the hype leading into the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao was astronomical. Billed as the fight of the century and what Mayweather called the biggest fight of all time, it would have taken an all-time classic, 12-round battle for the anticipation to pay off. The two fighters went 12 rounds, but there wasn’t much of a battle as Mayweather remained in control throughout and claimed the unanimous decision victory.

Injury makes Pacquiao’s immediate future unclear

Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Floyd Mayweather is certainly nothing to be ashamed of -- he’s just the latest of 48 straight wins for Mayweather, in one way. But even though Pacquiao remains a top fighter, and even though his age doesn’t seem to be a major hindrance for him, time may be catching up in other ways.

Pacquiao reportedly fought with a shoulder injury on Saturday night, having suffered the setback in training camp. The fighter said at the post-fight press conference that a recent MRI revealed a tear, and it’s possible that he could be facing surgery. Promoter Bob Arum compared it to the injury that Kobe Bryant had, which has him on the shelf for nine months from the date of his own surgery.

Who’s next? One more fight, no clear choice

    Al Bello/Getty Images

Floyd Mayweather’s unanimous decision win over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night wasn’t exactly unexpected, but it did confirm something: there’s nobody better in the game, not today and not in this generation. So what’s next for the 38-year-old pound-for-pound king?

Mayweather was asked about that at the post-fight press conference. All he would say is that he indeed intends to return in September for what is the final fight on his record contract with CBS Sports and Showtime. Mayweather also said he’s lost some love for the sport of boxing, and the fighter has been talking legitimate retirement in the build-up to the Pacquiao bout, with his tune not changing after it was over. Other than saying the fight would be in September, Mayweather asked if he could simply enjoy his latest victory before getting into the subject of his next fight.

Pacquiao fought despite tear in right shoulder

Floyd Mayweather looked like the clearly superior fighter during his unanimous victory against Manny Pacquiao, but as it turns out it was not against a 100-percent Pacquiao. After the fight, Pacquiao revealed he fought through a shoulder injury and was denied a pre-fight shot by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Pacquiao said he has a tear in his right shoulder.

“Two weeks before the fight, my shoulder was getting better and better, but it still wasn’t 100 percent,” Pacquiao said.

Mayweather simply too good for Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather improved to 48-0 with a win over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday in a fight that probably failed to live up to the hype, though it’s arguable that nothing could have. At any rate, Mayweather won on scores of 116-112, 116-112, and 118-110. SB Nation scored the fight 117-111 for Mayweather.

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) was nearly perfect, stifling Pacquiao’s output and ability to land clean shots. Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KO) certainly had moments of success, but ultimately they were few and far between. The 36-year-old Pacquiao looked in good shape and looked quick and strong. But, Mayweather’s defense, nullifying jab, and hard straight right hands kept him off-balance for most of the bout, and in the end, he outlanded Pacquiao nearly 2-to-1 (148-81).

Mayweather stays in control in round 8

Floyd Mayweather looking more comfortable the last couple of rounds, and Manny Pacquiao seems to think he needs to make something happen. In our estimation, he’s right. Manny is able to work Mayweather into the corners, but isn’t doing work once there. Pacquiao’s angles, the way he attacks, are being largely nullified by Mayweather, and Floyd’s touching and landing shots this round, boxing at his pace. Manny looks slightly desperate at points, and that speaks to the judges at ringside. It would be hard to imagine a judge scoring this round for Manny Pacquiao, even though he did land a good left hand. Mayweather doing a great job staying at the range he wants, controlling the ring, and not letting Manny Pacquiao do any serious damage against him. We’re seeing a lot of the brilliant of Floyd right now.

SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Floyd Mayweather, who now leads 78-74 on our card

Mayweather again holds off Pacquiao in Round 7

Floyd Mayweather is looking to once again keep Manny Pacquiao from developing any rhythm in this round, and he’s getting the job done in the first half of the round. Manny does land a good left hand shot in the final minute, but he’s going to need to do something special to take this round.

You have to like what Floyd Mayweather is doing in terms of shutting Pacquiao down as soon as Manny starts to look like he’s found some answers. He did it in Round 5 tonight, and he’s done it here in Round 7, even if Manny did have some success again this round. It just wasn’t enough, and Floyd’s defense and counters and jabs are winning the fight right now.

Pacquiao makes a case in Round 6

Manny Pacquiao is making his stand here in Round 6, having likely lost four of the first five rounds and looking to build some offensive momentum. Floyd Mayweather is there and throwing back, landing some clipping counter shots, but Pacquiao is bringing his best game at the moment, and he got in some nice flurries this round.

After the round, Floyd Sr is rather irate at Floyd in the corner.

Mayweather came back and pushed Pacquiao back in this round, landing good, clean shots, and fighting more aggressively, as he did in Round 1.

Floyd Mayweather started fast in Round 1, and is coming out looking to do the same. Pacquiao moving toward Mayweather a bit more to start this round, and landing good shots.
