When the 2015 Belmont Stakes are run on Saturday in New York, American Pharoah will be the favorite to capture his third leg and become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. But in the eight-horse field, a pair pose a threat to history, in the eyes of the odds makers.
Belmont Stakes 2015 odds: Frosted, Materiality pose challenge to American Pharoah
American Pharoah has 2/3 odds to win the Belmont on Wednesday night, per Odds Shark, up from 3/5 odds in the opening line.
His biggest challengers it seems will be Frosted, ridden by Joel Rosario, at 6/1 odds, and Materiality, ridden by John Velazquez, at 13/2 odds.
Frosted finished fourth at the Kentucky Derby.
“We weren’t looking for any specific draw, but in the middle is always a great place to be,” Frosted trainer Kiaran McLaughlin told the Associated Press. “In a mile-and-a-half race, they will all have plenty of time to sort it all out.”
Materiality finished sixth at Churchill Downs.
“It was a rough trip, but I’ll tell you what, that horse learned a lot. He figured it out really quick,” Javier Castellano (who rode Materiality at the Kentucky Derby) told the New York Times on Tuesday. “Turning for home, he passed horses, he split horses and he finished really, really strong. I think he could be a perfect fit for the Belmont.”
