Geno Smith was reportedly sucker punched in the Jets locker room by defensive end I.K. Enemkpali. Now the Jets have a vacancy at quarterback and are looking to resolve it as soon as possible.
Geno Smith pissed about getting sucker punched

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports“I’m extremely [angry],” Smith, who is still recovering from a fractured jaw he suffered after being sucker punched, told Newsday. “But I have to keep my temper down. I can’t exhibit that in the locker room, I can’t exhibit that on a daily basis. I just feel for my family more because they enjoy seeing me out there.”
“I don’t regret anything,” he added, via NJ.com. “I don’t think I did anything wrong. You can’t go back in time.”

Based on New Jersey statutes Smith could press charges against Enemkpali if he so desired. As outlined in detail here, an individual in the state of New Jersey is guilty of “simple assault” if there is an “attempt to cause or purposely, knowingly or recklessly causes bodily injury to another” individual. That would seemingly apply to Enemkpali.
However, if charges were filed against Enemkpali and he was found guilty, his punishment would be a light fine, between $500 and $1,000. Enemkpali could also beat the case by proving that Smith provoked him.

As with Incognito, the Bills reportedly gave Enemkpali a chance to tell his side of the story about what happened with Smith. Ryan apparently came away from conversations confident that Enemkpali would bounce back, though he has yet to talk to the defensive end.
What’s known at the moment is that Enemkpali allegedly bought Smith plane tickets to fly to his football camp, and Smith never paid Enemkpali back after having to pull out because a person close to him died. Smith reportedly agreed to reimburse Enemkpali but never did, which led to the heated moments after Jets practice Tuesday when Smith allegedly put his finger in Enemkpali’s face and Enemkpali punched him.

According to the report, Enemkpali purchased Smith a $600 plane ticket to attend his football camp in July. Smith, however, did not end up attending after a person close to him was killed in a motorcycle accident. Enemkpali reportedly asked Smith to pay for the unused plane ticket, which Smith agreed to do. Only that never happened and the two got into a dispute in the locker room about it on Tuesday.
While complete details of the incident are still unknown, it ended with Enemkpali punching Smith and breaking his jaw. Smith will now require surgery and could miss up to 10 weeks. The Jets released Enemkpali following the incident. He was scheduled to earn a base salary of $510,000 in 2015, according to Over the Cap.
