Stephen Gostkowski is a really, really good kicker. He is making 87.3 percent of his field goal attempts in his career, and had missed just one extra point in his career heading into the AFC Championship against the Denver Broncos.
Stephen Gostkowski missed his first extra point in 9 years and it cost the Patriots the AFC Championship
Stephen Gostkowski’s first missed extra point since 2006 came in the Pats’ biggest game of the season, and it potentially cost them a trip to the Super Bowl.
On Sunday, the New England Patriots were about to tie the game in the first quarter after scoring a touchdown when Gostkowski did something he hadn’t done since 2006: Miss an extra point.
It cost them dearly. The Patriots had to go for a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to potentially tie the game, down 20-18, and force overtime. They didn’t get it.
Gostkowski had made 523 straight extra points before Sunday. He was one of just five kickers who hadn’t missed an extra point this season after the NFL moved the line of scrimmage for extra-point kicks back to the 15-yard line to start the 2015 season.
Gostkowski missed at one of the worst possible moments, and the Broncos are headed to the Super Bowl as a result.
