The San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears entered a December matchup with three combined wins and a pair of offenses that aren’t good. So it’s not surprising that dark, snowy weather essentially put a halt to offense altogether.
It took 22 minutes for a pass to be completed in the 49ers vs. Bears game
The 49ers and Bears already had bad offense to begin with, and now snow is making things worse.
It wasn’t until less than eight minutes were left in the second quarter when Colin Kaepernick connected with Vance McDonald for 4 yards that the first pass of the game was completed.
Both Kaepernick and Matt Barkley played well in Week 12, but neither quarterback was able to complete a pass in the first quarter. With the weather affecting the offenses, both teams went to a run-heavy attack.
There were two completions prior to the second quarter pass to McDonald, but both were wiped out by penalties.
The weather has been bad enough that even good field position hasn’t produced points, with the 49ers electing to punt from the Bears’ 32-yard line rather than attempt a fourth-down conversion or a 49-yard field goal.
But at least the players seem to be having some fun with it, as one 49ers player even got a penalty for celebrating with a snow angel.
Oddly enough, one of the games with the lowest passing production in NFL history was another game between the 49ers and Bears at Soldier Field. In November 2005, Chicago beat San Francisco, 17-9, despite completing only eight passes, which was much more than the single pass completed by the 49ers.
