Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers had a rough go Sunday in a 26-6 loss in Chicago against the Bears, but Kelly had dealt with something much greater just two days earlier.
Chip Kelly coached the 49ers against the Bears on Sunday despite his father’s passing
Paul Kelly passed away on Friday, and Chip’s mother wanted him to coach.

Paul Kelly, Chip’s father, had passed away on Friday night. Kelly confirmed his father’s passing on Sunday afternoon.
According to CSN Bay Area, Kelly flew from Chicago to New Hampshire on Friday after learning about his father’s passing. Kelly was obviously back in time for the game Sunday.
Kelly told CSN Bay Area, “My mom wanted me to coach.”
49ers GM Trent Baalke released the following statement:
“The thoughts and prayers of the entire San Francisco 49ers organization are with Chip and his family as they face the difficult process of grieving the loss of a loved one. Understandably, coach will take some time to be with his family before returning to the team this week. Chip has our continued support as he mourns the passing of his father.”
Kelly is expected to travel back to New Hampshire after the game to be with his family and his mother. Baalke reportedly told the team during a meeting on Saturday morning in Chicago.
