Alex Smith avoided an illegal pass by an inch and made one of his best plays of the season

Smith’s awareness on this play kept the Chiefs’ offense moving.

It looked as though Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith maybe should have been penalized for crossing the line of scrimmage in the second quarter of Thursday Night Football against the Oakland Raiders, but he wasn’t.

It’s because his body didn’t cross the line of scrimmage.

Smith’s feet went past the line of scrimmage, but his body — and the ball — remained behind it. The result of the play was a completion to Chris Conley, which Conley took for 31 yards.

It’s been a solid outing for Smith, who is moving the ball effectively against a stout Raiders defense.

On the same drive, Smith even completed a pass to himself. The series ended in a Chiefs touchdown, giving Kansas City a 14-3 lead over the Raiders.
