Marco Rubio wants a Tim Tebow statue to replace a Confederate general’s at the U.S. Capitol

Need a Florida representative in the National Statuary Hall? Why not Tebow?

When Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith is removed from the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall, the state of Florida will be lacking a statue. Fortunately, Sunshine State Senator Marco Rubio knows just the man to take his place.

Tim Tebow was more force of nature than quarterback as a member of the Florida Gators from 2006 to 2009. He helped his team to a pair of BCS championships and won the 2007 Heisman Trophy as a nigh-unstoppable running and passing threat. That might not make him more important to the state than famous Floridians like Ernest Hemingway, John James Audubon, or Harriet Beecher Stowe, but Hemingway never learned how to run the read option, so point: Tebow.

Wednesday’s tweet was just the latest case of Gator fandom from the Senator from Florida. He’s been an unabashed UF supporter throughout his career.

But what Tebow pose would you immortalize in stone here? His internet-immortal “Tebowing” prayer pose didn’t catch on until he’d left Florida for Denver, so that’s out. The jump pass he used to ice Oklahoma in the 2009 National Championship game would be an obvious choice, but it would be difficult to suspend a two-ton chunk of granite in midair for eternity. A shot of Tebow running the ball has already been done before in Gainesville:

Rubio could kill two birds with a postgame handshake between Tebow and legendary former Gator coach Steve Spurrier. Or would the state of Florida go full Pimp My Ride and make a monument of Tebow accepting his Heisman award, thus putting a statue inside his statue? The possibilities here are endless, as long as you swap out the “finding a stable job with an NFL team” poses for the “analyzing matchups on the SEC Network” ones.
