Former Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell heads to Blackhawks on a 1-year deal

The 37-year-old defenseman wants a chance to win now.

As rumored on June 30, 37-year-old Brian Campbell is now a member of the Chicago Blackhawks. The veteran defenseman will head to his No. 1 choice on a one-year, $2 million deal.

There were talks Campbell would be on the outs in Florida after the Panthers traded for then signed Rangers defenseman Keith Yandle to a seven-year deal. Pierre LeBrun broke the news an hour before the start of free agency, then later confirmed the report, adding that bonuses are likely part of the deal.

Campbell has put up 487 points in 1,002 career games played. The major part of his 17-year career was spent in Buffalo, but Campbell did play with the Blackhawks between 2008 and 2011, helping bring a Stanley Cup to Chicago in 2010.

The veteran was moved to Florida in 2011 and has helped mentor the young group of defensemen the Panthers have. Last year, Campbell had 31 points and helped lead the Panthers to a playoff berth.

Though the Panthers have made great strides in the past year, with Campbell on the tail end of his career, the veteran clearly wants the best chance to win and he believes that place is Chicago.
