Wednesday got off to a strong start for Team USA, as Kristin Armstrong took the gold in the women’s cycling time trial, and it kicked off a solid showing by the United States across the board.
2016 Olympics medal count: Team USA still leads in both golds and overall
The United States extended their lead in the overall medal count on Wednesday.

Sam Dorman and Mike Hixon of the United States took a silver medal in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event, and Daryl Homer brings home a silver medal in fencing.
American Josh Prenot added another silver medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke event, finishing behind Dmitriy Balandin, who made history by winning the first gold medal in swimming for Kazakhstan. For Prenot, it was the first medal for the United States in the event since 2004.
Nathan Adrian won bronze in the men’s 100m freestyle, narrowly missing the silver, saying he “can’t be upset with that.” The bronze is the third medal of the Rio games for Adrian.
Team USA, which has dominated the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay for the past 20 years, did so again, bringing home its fifth gold medal in the event since 1996. The only Olympics in that span in which the United States’ women have failed to bring home the gold was 2008, when they won bronze.
The United States maintains a lead over China with 11 gold medals to their 10, and there’s a healthy distance between Team USA and the Chinese in total medal count, with 32 for the Americans and 23 for the Chinese. Japan is third in the medal count, with six golds, one silver, 11 bronze and 18 total.
