Trevone Boykin’s deep touchdown pass set Seahawks up for the win

Boykin also helped his case to win Seattle’s backup quarterback job.

Trevone Boykin landed with the Seattle Seahawks after going undrafted out of TCU in 2016. He made his presence known in Seattle’s first preseason game, hitting receiver Tanner McEvoy with a deep pass into the end zone to bring Seattle within one point of the Kansas City Chiefs. He did this with his team trailing by seven points with four seconds remaining in the game.

Boykin currently sits behind starting quarterback Russell Wilson on the depth chart, and there’s no veteran quarterback on the roster to challenge Boykin for the backup role. This play certainly helps his case.

Speaking to the News Tribune, Boykin said he hasn’t even considered the fact that he’s got a legitimate shot to become the Seahawks No. 2 quarterback.

“I haven’t (thought about) that, at all,” Boykin said. “I am just trying to push forward with my teammates, and learn from Russ and learn what he does. Just try to learn this offense and execute it the best I can.”

Boykin executed this particular play well. His release is smooth and the pass is on target. It didn’t hurt that McEvoy, a rookie out of Wisconsin, is 6’6.

The Seahawks were trailing the Chiefs 16-6 heading into the fourth quarter, and a Steven Hauschka field goal in the fourth quarter narrowed Kansas City’s lead to seven points. Following Boykin’s touchdown pass to McEvoy, Seattle converted a two-point attempt to defeat the Chiefs, 17-16.
