These are our 5 favorite photos from this weekend at the Olympics

Not that there isn’t plenty of bad surrounding them, but the Olympics are sort of beautiful. Rio de Janeiro is a colorful city, and the Games have brought thousands of the world’s best athletes to work their crafts on a gorgeous stage. (It’s definitely true that there’s an ugly underbelly to what we’re seeing on TV.)

The Olympics have brought more than athletes and spectators to the city. They’ve also brought scores of photographers. Here are some of my favorite photos they’ve shot so far on this Olympic weekend:

You’re not supposed to win Olympic swimming races by as much as Katie Ledecky won the 800m freestyle on Friday.

Michael Phelps plunged into the water for the third leg of Saturday’s 4x100m medley relay. Phelps swam a good butterfly, and the United States won in probably his last Olympic race ever.

When Usain Bolt runs, everyone’s looking at him. And he knows it.

Juan Martín del Potro was really happy and really sad after beating Rafael Nadal in men’s tennis singles on Saturday.

The women’s marathon is a grueling test. Its backdrop was beautiful.

Athletics - Olympics: Day 9
A good picture should tell a story. A great one might tell two – that these runners are fast, and that the scenery is gorgeous.

A hat tip to Getty Images for doing a really good job capturing what’s going on in Rio this month. After all, there’s so much good stuff to capture.
