Cooper Lutkenhaus makes indoor track history at World Championships

What were you doing during your junior year of high school?

As impressive as your accomplishments might have been, it is rather unlikely that they top what Texas high school junior Cooper Lutkenhaus just accomplished at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland.

Lutkenhaus took the 800-meter title at just 17 years and 93 days, becoming both the youngest individual medalist in World Indoor Championships history, and becoming the youngest male to win a senior individual world medal, indoors or outdoors. Lutkenhaus took the gold medal with a time of 1:44.44, ahead of Eliott Crestan of Belgium who took silver. Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui took bronze.

The title continues what has been an incredible stretch of performance for the Texas high school junior. Back at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in August of 2025, Lutkenhaus ran the fastest 800-meter time in world history for an athlete younger than 18, taking silver with a time of 1:42.27. That performance qualified him for the World Athletic Championships in Tokyo which took place last September, and while he was eliminated in the first round at that event, he claimed the USA Track and Field Indoor 800-meter title just three weeks ago, setting a new under-20 world record of 1:44.03 during that event.

“I came into this knowing I probably wasn’t the favorite, but anytime I step into a final, I believe I have a chance to win,” Lutkenhaus said after taking the title in Poland.

He also praised his new teammates, as he decided to turn professional just before the Tokyo World Championships.

“Competing at senior level has been great. Everyone has been really supportive, especially on Team USA,” he said in Poland. “I could hear teammates shouting for me from the infield the whole race, especially in the last 150 meters.

“That really pushed me to the finish. We have such a strong group.”
