The San Francisco 49ers have yet to name a starting quarterback, but Colin Kaepernick is quickly falling out of the race. Kaepernick is dealing with ’a dead arm’ that is keeping him from fully practicing.
Colin Kaepernick ‘dead arm’ may cost him starting job, fantasy value
We break down the fantasy implications of Colin Kapernick continuing to miss practice with a ‘dead arm.’

On Tuesday, Kaepernick did not throw passes during practice, according to local media. That suggests the arm is still weak and not strong enough for him to be an effective passer.
After missing the 49ers’ preseason opener, Kaepernick is now in danger of missing Saturday’s matchup with the Denver Broncos. That would give Blaine Gabbert a good chance to strengthen his hold on the starting quarterback job, which at this point, he may win by default.
Fantasy Spin: New head coach Chip Kelly’s offense has the potential to turn whoever the starting quarterback is into a viable fantasy option. Kaepernick was already a fantasy stud for a brief time under Jim Harbaugh.
Injuries and poor play marred his 2015 season, which allowed Gabbert to claim the starting job and become a decent waiver-wire option. That is the ceiling for either of these players before the regular season opens.
However, don’t be surprised if one of them emerges as a fantasy option once they are comfortable with Kelly’s up-tempo offense. That offense has already made average guys like Nick Foles become breakout fantasy studs.
