Team USA’s best shot for a medal in rhythmic gymnastics is 16-year-old Laura Zeng, and if she wins one, she’ll make history.
At age 16, Zeng may be the best rhythmic gymnast in United States history, and she’s not a member of the group all-around team, as she will be representing Team USA in the individual all-around competition. Zeng has established numerous records, becoming the first American athlete to claim a youth Olympic medal or Olympic medal in rhythmic gymnastics. Zeng became the first U.S. rhythmic gymnast to earn any medal at a World Cup competition, winning bronze in the individual and team all-around events in Minsk in 2016.
In Rio, Zeng stands a chance to become the first U.S. athlete to win a medal in rhythmic gymnastics ever. To date, the best finish by an American rhythmic gymnast was 10th, established by Valerie Zimring in 1986.
On Friday, Zeng will compete in the qualifications for the individual all-around competition. The qualifiers will be streamed live via NBC Sports.
