Rio Olympics medal count 2016: Team USA adds 3 gold medals on the final day of competition
The last day of the Rio Olympics was a strong showing for Team USA.
Claressa Shields won gold in the women’s middleweight boxing final, replicating her success in the London games and becoming just the second boxer in American history to win two gold medals in the sport. Shields defeated Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands by unanimous decision to secure the gold for Team USA.
Kyle Snyder became the youngest American to win wrestling gold when he beat Azerbaijan’s Khetag Gazyumov in the men’s freestyle wrestling gold medal match in the 97 kg weight class. Snyder, a 20-year-old Ohio State student, defeated Gazyumov, who won bronze at the Beijing and London Games, with a final score of 2-1.
Team USA men’s basketball got off to a slow start against Serbia in the gold medal game, but when the Americans hit their stride in the second quarter, they never slowed down. Kevin Durant put up 30 points for the United States, and solid performances off the bench by Paul George and Kyle Lowry propelled Team USA to a dominant 96-66 victory and a gold medal.
The United States also earned three bronze medals on Sunday. Team USA won bronze in men’s volleyball, rallying to beat Russia in five sets. Galen Rupp also brought home the bronze for the United States in the men’s marathon.
The final medal tally tells the story of a dominant Team USA performance throughout the Rio Olympics. The United States finishes the Games with 46 gold medals, 37 silver medals and 38 bronze medals for a total of 121 medals.
