Japan’s prime minister turned into Super Mario at the Olympic closing ceremony
Okay, this was perfect.

James Dator has been covering a wide range of sports for SB Nation for over a decade, with a special focus on the NFL.
Every Olympic closing ceremony features a small vignette made by the next host city to get people excited. It was Toyko’s turn during the close to the Rio games, and they didn’t disappoint -- not by a long shot.
Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe dressed up like Mario and took a pipe from Tokyo to Rio to appear in the middle of the stadium. Let that sentence sink in for a second. A head of state cosplayed as Super Mario to rise up from inside a pipe in the middle of a stadium. That wasn’t all from Tokyo’s amazing teaser for 2020.
There were anime soccer players.
Pac-Man running laps vs. ghosts.
A Hello Kitty mascot.
If this is any sign of what Tokyo is preparing for the Olympics then we all should set our reminders for the opening ceremony of 2020, because it’s going to be lit.
