Quarterback Tony Romo’s back injury is an unfortunate blow to both the Dallas Cowboys and fantasy owners, but he may have a bit of good news. According to the MMQB’s Albert Breer, Romo avoided any ligament damage in his back and could resume training in 3-6 weeks.
Tony Romo avoids ligament damage, but won’t help fantasy owners for a while
Romo could reportedly start training again in 3-6 weeks if his rehab progresses on schedule. We break down the fantasy implications.

However, that doesn’t mean Romo will be ready to play again by that time. He could still miss about half the season, with the Cowboys reportedly planning to have him back after the Week 7 bye. Fourth-round rookie Dak Prescott will be the starter while Romo is out.
Fantasy impact: Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones insisted that Romo will still be the starter when he comes back, but obviously a lot will depend on how Prescott performs. If he carries over his impressive preseason run to the regular season, Prescott could be a valuable QB2 in 12-team leagues.
Of course, that’s all speculative right now because it’s impossible to predict how a rookie will perform when the games count and the pressure is turned up. At the moment, Prescott should be viewed as a deep bench flier in the later rounds of drafts. Romo will be sitting on the waiver wire for the majority of the fantasy season.
